Peppa Pig is a British preschool cartoon about a cheerful, slightly bossy little pig who loves jumping in muddy puddles. Each five-minute episode is a small slice of everyday life, a trip to the shops, a birthday, a rainy day, told with dry humour and a narrator who sounds like he's reading a bedtime story.
The show was created by Neville Astley and Mark Baker and first aired on Channel 5 in the UK in 2004. Every character is an animal, and nearly every animal family has a child in Peppa's playgroup, a child in George's age group, and a set of parents with a job in town. This guide is organised that way: the Pig family first, then Peppa's friends by animal family, then the grown-ups.

The Pig family
The Pigs live in a house on top of a very round hill. Most episodes start at home and end with the whole family falling over laughing.
Peppa Pig
Pig · Age 4 · Main character
Peppa is confident, chatty and convinced she knows best, which is often where the trouble starts. She loves muddy puddles more than anything, along with her teddy and her goldfish Goldie. She can be a show-off and a bit unkind to George, but she's also loving and quick to make up, and the show lets her be a believable four-year-old rather than a perfect one.
George Pig
Pig · Age 2 · Peppa's little brother
George is Peppa's little brother, who speaks mostly in single words and adores his toy, Mr. Dinosaur. He bursts into tears when things go wrong and cheers up just as fast. Many episodes are about Peppa learning to include him, or George quietly proving he can do more than she thinks.
Mummy Pig
Pig · Peppa's mum
Mummy Pig is calm, capable and usually right, though she lets Daddy Pig find that out for himself. She works from home on her computer, and she's more adventurous than she looks: she's the one who turns out to be a brilliant volunteer firefighter or a calm hand in a crisis.
- Voice
- Morwenna Banks
Daddy Pig
Pig · Peppa's dad
Daddy Pig is big, round, jolly and certain he's an expert on everything, from map reading to putting up pictures. He's usually wrong, and the jokes about his tummy and his overconfidence are among the show's longest running. He's also a devoted, easily delighted dad who loves a muddy puddle as much as Peppa does.
- Voice
- Richard Ridings
Granny Pig
Pig · Grandmother
Granny Pig lives in a cottage with a big garden and keeps chickens and a pet parrot, Polly, who repeats everything. She's a keen gardener and baker and treats a visit from Peppa and George as a chance to teach them something new.
Grandpa Pig
Pig · Grandfather
Grandpa Pig loves his garden, his boat and his little train, Gertrude. He's proud and a bit competitive, especially with his old friend Grandad Dog, and their good-natured rivalry runs through many episodes.
Uncle Pig, Aunty Pig and family
Pigs · Peppa's relatives
Uncle Pig is Daddy Pig's brother, just as round and just as jolly. He and Aunty Pig have a daughter, Peppa's older cousin Chloé, whom Peppa looks up to, and a baby son, Alexander. Chloé being older and cleverer gives Peppa a taste of being the little one for a change.
Peppa and George's friends
Peppa's friends all go to playgroup with her and Madame Gazelle. Each one comes from a different animal family, and many have a younger sibling who plays with George.
Suzy Sheep
Sheep · Peppa's best friend
Suzy is Peppa's best friend and her match in bossiness. The two fall out and make up constantly, usually over who's in charge of the game. Suzy likes dressing up, especially as a nurse, and she can whistle, which Peppa can't, a source of great frustration.
Rebecca Rabbit
Rabbit · Playgroup friend
Rebecca is a cheerful rabbit who loves carrots and lives with her family in a burrow. She's a good-natured friend who goes along with most games, and she's usually seen with her little brother Richard.
Richard Rabbit
Rabbit · George's best friend
Richard is Rebecca's little brother and George's best friend. Like George he says very little, and the two toddlers get along perfectly, especially when there are dinosaurs involved.
Danny Dog
Dog · Playgroup friend
Danny is a loud, sporty puppy who loves football and pirates. His grandad, Grandad Dog, runs the local garage, and his dad, Captain Dog, is a sailor, so Danny is never short of stories.
Pedro Pony
Pony · Playgroup friend
Pedro is a gentle, sleepy pony who wears glasses and is famously late for everything. He forgets things, takes his time over everything and is completely unbothered by it.
Zoe Zebra
Zebra · Playgroup friend
Zoe is a friendly, sociable zebra whose dad, Mr. Zebra, is the postman. She has twin baby sisters, Zuzu and Zaza, who are always getting into mischief.
Candy Cat
Cat · Playgroup friend
Candy is a quiet, easy-going cat and one of Peppa's regular playmates. She's less of a talker than Peppa or Suzy and tends to follow where the game goes.
Emily Elephant
Elephant · Playgroup friend
Emily is shy when she first joins playgroup, and her debut episode is about how the others welcome her. She can do clever things with her trunk and quickly becomes part of the group.
Edmond Elephant
Elephant · Emily's little brother
Edmond is one of George's group and announces that he is "a clever clogs" whenever he knows something. He's a small know-it-all, and the other toddlers don't mind a bit.
Freddy Fox
Fox · Playgroup friend
Freddy has a brilliant sense of smell, which comes in handy for finding lost things. His dad, Mr. Fox, drives a van and will sell you absolutely anything you ask for.
Wendy Wolf
Wolf · Playgroup friend
Wendy is a friendly wolf who can huff and puff remarkably hard, a nod to a certain fairy tale. She and her family are entirely nice, which is the joke.
Gerald Giraffe
Giraffe · Playgroup friend
Gerald is the new boy whose great height makes him stand out on his first day. His episode is about fitting in and finding that being different can be useful.
Molly Mole
Mole · Playgroup friend
Molly is a mole who joins the playgroup later in the show's run. She's quiet and kind and fits in quickly.
Mandy Mouse
Mouse · Playgroup friend
Mandy uses a wheelchair, and the show includes her in games and adventures without making it the focus of her story. She's lively and fun, and her arrival was widely welcomed by families.
Delphine Donkey
Donkey · Peppa's pen pal from France
Delphine is Peppa's French pen pal who comes to visit with her family, including her little brother Didier. Their episodes introduce a few French words and the idea of friends who live far away.
Kylie Kangaroo
Kangaroo · Friend in Australia
Kylie is Peppa's friend from Australia, whom the Pigs visit on their trip there. She's brilliant at bouncing and shows Peppa a very different kind of holiday.

Grown-ups and townsfolk
Peppa's town is small enough that the same grown-ups do most of the jobs. A few of them have become characters fans love as much as the children.
Madame Gazelle
Gazelle · Playgroup teacher
Madame Gazelle is the elegant, French-accented teacher who runs the playgroup. She has taught for so long that she taught Peppa's parents too. She plays the guitar and leads the children in songs, and she's unflappable no matter what they get up to.
Miss Rabbit
Rabbit · Does every job in town
Miss Rabbit is Mummy Rabbit's twin sister, and she seems to work everywhere: the shop, the ice cream stand, the bus, the helicopter, the fire station. It's one of the show's best running jokes, and she's always cheerfully exhausted.
- Voice
- Sarah Ann Kennedy
Grampy Rabbit
Rabbit · Rebecca's grandfather
Grampy Rabbit is Rebecca and Richard's loud, boastful grandfather. He's a fun, chaotic old rabbit who treats every outing as an adventure and is never short of a tall tale.
Grandad Dog
Dog · Runs the garage
Grandad Dog is Danny's grandfather and Grandpa Pig's old friend and rival. They bicker about boats and engines but are clearly very fond of each other.
Mr. Bull
Bull · Roadworks and building
Mr. Bull is the booming roadworker who turns up whenever something needs digging up or fixing. He's big and loud and very good-natured.
Doctor Brown Bear
Bear · Family doctor
The town's patient doctor, called out whenever Peppa or George feels poorly. He's kind, unhurried and slightly weary of house calls that turn out to be nothing.
Mr. Potato
Potato · TV star
Mr. Potato is a talking potato who presents Peppa's favourite TV show and later turns up in person, most memorably at the theme park Potato City. He's a celebrity in Peppa's world.
Peppa Pig voice cast
Peppa's voice has been recast several times as each young actor grew up; the adult roles have been far more stable.

| Mummy Pig | Morwenna Banks |

For parents: what Peppa Pig is about
Peppa Pig is made for children of about 2 to 5. Episodes are very short, so it works well when you only have a few minutes. It airs on preschool channels in the UK, the US and many other countries; check your local listings and services for what's available where you live.
- Everyday life. Shops, swimming, the dentist, a new baby, a lost tooth. The show turns ordinary events into little stories, which helps young children make sense of their own week.
- Dry, adult-friendly humour. Daddy Pig's pride, Miss Rabbit's many jobs and the narrator's deadpan lines are written for grown-ups as much as kids.
- Imperfect behaviour. Peppa can be rude or bossy. Some parents worry about copycat cheek; others like that it gives them something to talk about.
- Inclusion. Characters like Mandy Mouse and the visits abroad gently widen Peppa's world.
If your child likes Peppa, Bluey is the obvious next step: another family of animals, slightly longer episodes and more emotional depth. For action, try the rescue pups of Paw Patrol; for songs, CoComelon. Kids drawn to Peppa's gentle, pastel world often love Hello Kitty and Care Bears too.

Does Peppa Pig have a baby sister?
