SpongeBob SquarePants is set in Bikini Bottom, a small town on the sea floor where a cheerful sea sponge works as a fry cook and treats every ordinary day as an adventure. Almost every story comes out of a tiny circle of neighbours and coworkers: the best friend who lives under a rock, the grumpy octopus next door, the money-obsessed boss, and the one-eyed rival across the street who wants the secret recipe.

Stephen Hillenburg, a former marine biology teacher, created the show for Nickelodeon, and it premiered in 1999. It has since run for well over a decade and a half of seasons, several theatrical and streaming films, and spin-offs including Kamp Koral and The Patrick Star Show. The cast has stayed remarkably stable the whole time, which is why the same handful of characters are recognisable to three generations of viewers.

The main characters

The core seven appear in nearly every episode. They live within a few blocks of each other on Conch Street or work at the Krusty Krab, and most plots start with SpongeBob's enthusiasm colliding with someone else's plans.

Patrick Star

Best friend · Lives under a rock

Patrick is a pink starfish and SpongeBob's best friend. He's lazy, easily confused and capable of spectacularly bad decisions, but he's also fiercely loyal and occasionally stumbles into real wisdom by accident. Many of the show's most quoted moments are Patrick saying something completely sincere and completely wrong. He got his own talk-show spin-off, The Patrick Star Show, in 2021.

Voice
Bill Fagerbakke

Squidward Tentacles

Cashier · Next-door neighbour

Squidward is an octopus who works the till at the Krusty Krab and lives in the Easter Island head between SpongeBob and Patrick. He sees himself as a misunderstood artist: a painter, a clarinet player and a man of refined taste. Nobody else agrees, and his days are spent being cheerfully pestered by the two neighbours he most wants to avoid. He's the straight man, and a surprisingly relatable one for adult viewers.

Voice
Rodger Bumpass

Sandy Cheeks

Scientist · Karate expert

Sandy is a squirrel from Texas who lives under the sea in an air-filled glass dome and wears a diving suit whenever she leaves it. She's a working scientist and inventor, a karate fanatic and the most competent person in Bikini Bottom. Her friendship with SpongeBob is built on shared energy, and her outsider status gives the show a handy way to poke fun at life underwater. She headlined her own film, Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie, in 2024.

Voice
Carolyn Lawrence

Mr. Krabs

Owner of the Krusty Krab

Eugene Krabs is a crab, a navy veteran and the owner of Bikini Bottom's most popular restaurant. He loves money with an intensity that drives a huge share of the plots, from underpaying his staff to selling things he shouldn't. He's not cruel, just cheap, and he guards the Krabby Patty secret formula as if his life depends on it. Underneath, he's a devoted, if embarrassing, father to Pearl.

Voice
Clancy Brown

Plankton

Owner of the Chum Bucket

Sheldon J. Plankton is a tiny, one-eyed copepod with enormous ambitions. He runs the Chum Bucket, a restaurant no one eats at, directly across from the Krusty Krab, and his life's goal is to steal the secret formula. His schemes are elaborate and always fail. He's at his funniest bickering with his computer wife, Karen, and he got his own Netflix film, Plankton: The Movie, in 2025.

Voice
Mr. Lawrence

Gary the Snail

SpongeBob's pet

Gary is a sea snail who meows like a cat and is far more intelligent than he lets on. He reads, judges, and occasionally rescues his owner. The episodes where Gary runs away or SpongeBob neglects him are some of the show's most heartfelt, and they make clear that this is SpongeBob's most important relationship after Patrick.

Voice
Tom Kenny

Recurring characters

Bikini Bottom has a deep bench of recurring faces. Some, like Pearl and Mrs. Puff, are close to main-cast status. Others turn up a few times a season and are instantly recognisable when they do.

Pearl Krabs

Mr. Krabs' daughter

Pearl is a teenage sperm whale and Mr. Krabs' only child. She cares about the mall, boy bands and fitting in, and her father's stinginess is a constant source of embarrassment. Their episodes work because Krabs, for all his greed, really does try to make her happy, usually in the cheapest way possible.

Voice
Lori Alan

Mrs. Puff

Boating school teacher

Mrs. Puff is a pufferfish who runs the boating school SpongeBob has failed more times than anyone can count. When frightened, she inflates into a spiky ball, which happens a lot around SpongeBob. Her running arc is the slow erosion of her nerves, but she never actually gives up on him, which says something about both of them.

Voice
Mary Jo Catlett

Karen

Plankton's computer wife

Karen is a sarcastic supercomputer and Plankton's wife. She's smarter than her husband and knows it, and her dry commentary on his failed schemes is often the best joke in a Plankton episode. Their marriage is odd but real: she's exasperated with him and still on his side.

Voice
Jill Talley

Larry the Lobster

Lifeguard · Bodybuilder

Larry is a muscular red lobster who works as the lifeguard at Goo Lagoon and spends the rest of his time lifting weights. He's Bikini Bottom's fitness icon, which makes him the natural foil for SpongeBob's weak little arms. He's friendly rather than a bully, and pops up whenever an episode needs someone athletic.

Voice
Mr. Lawrence

Mermaid Man

Retired superhero

Mermaid Man is an elderly superhero living at the Shady Shoals retirement home, and SpongeBob and Patrick's greatest idol. He's forgetful, easily startled and still occasionally heroic. Watching the two fans drag him out of retirement is one of the show's best recurring setups.

Voice
Ernest Borgnine

Barnacle Boy

Mermaid Man's sidekick

Barnacle Boy is Mermaid Man's long-suffering former sidekick, now an old man still called "boy". He resents being treated as the junior partner after decades of service, and at one point briefly turns to villainy over it. He's the grumpy half of the duo and gets most of the dry lines.

Voice
Tim Conway

Squilliam Fancyson

Squidward's rival

Squilliam is Squidward's wealthy, successful old school rival, and everything Squidward wishes he were. He appears whenever Squidward needs to be humiliated in front of someone who matters, and his monobrow and smug grin make him an easy character to dislike.

The French Narrator

Narrator

The unseen narrator who introduces scenes and time skips in a nature-documentary French accent. His "a few moments later" cards are a running gag, and the voice is a tribute to the undersea documentaries Hillenburg grew up with.

Voice
Tom Kenny

Patchy the Pirate

Live-action fan club host

Patchy is a live-action pirate and devoted SpongeBob superfan who hosts special episodes from his house, usually with his parrot Potty. His segments wrap around holiday and event episodes and add a layer of affectionate silliness about fandom itself.

Voice
Tom Kenny

Bubble Bass

Picky Krusty Krab customer

Bubble Bass is a pedantic, overweight customer who loves catching the Krusty Krab out on tiny mistakes, most famously by hiding pickles under his tongue to claim they were missing. He's a send-up of the most exhausting kind of regular, and fans have adopted him as a meme.

Villains and antagonists

SpongeBob doesn't have many real villains. Most antagonists are either comically incompetent, like Plankton, or retired supervillains who share Mermaid Man's nursing-home energy. A few, mostly from the films and specials, are genuinely menacing.

The Flying Dutchman

Ghost pirate

The Flying Dutchman is a green, glowing ghost who sails a haunted ship and collects souls. He's the closest thing the show has to a horror villain, and his Halloween episodes are favourites. He's still played partly for laughs, especially when SpongeBob and Patrick fail to be scared of him.

Voice
Brian Doyle-Murray

Man Ray

Mermaid Man's archenemy

Man Ray is a supervillain in a manta-ray helmet who fought Mermaid Man in his prime. In the show he's mostly a bored retiree, and his best episode has SpongeBob and Patrick trying to teach him to be good, with tickling as the punishment. He's a parody of comic-book villains and very funny for it.

Voice
John Rhys-Davies

The Dirty Bubble

Supervillain

The Dirty Bubble is a giant, grimy bubble with a face and another of Mermaid Man's old foes. He's dangerous only until someone pops him, which is exactly how his fights tend to end.

King Neptune

King of the Sea

King Neptune rules the ocean from his palace and is vain, short-tempered and touchy about his hair. In the first SpongeBob movie, he freezes Mr. Krabs after believing he stole his crown, setting the plot in motion. He isn't the film's main villain, though. That role belongs to Plankton, who stole the crown in the first place.

How the characters fit together

Bikini Bottom works like a small-town sitcom. Each main character has one or two relationships that drive almost every episode:

  • SpongeBob and Patrick — best friends with the same childlike energy. They rarely fight, and when they do, it's an event.
  • SpongeBob and Squidward — the eternal optimist and the eternal pessimist, stuck as neighbours and coworkers. SpongeBob wants a friend; Squidward wants peace and quiet.
  • Mr. Krabs and Plankton — business rivals who were once friends, as the show explains in a flashback episode. Their feud over the formula is the show's longest-running plot.
  • Plankton and Karen — a strange marriage that still feels like a marriage, with all the sighing that implies.
  • SpongeBob and Sandy — friendly rivals in karate and science, and the friendship where SpongeBob is most often out of his depth.
  • Mr. Krabs and Pearl — a loving father whose idea of a treat is anything free.

SpongeBob voice cast

SpongeBob has kept most of its original voice cast for decades, which is rare for a long-running cartoon. Tom Kenny and Mr. Lawrence each cover several roles. Two notable veterans, Ernest Borgnine and Tim Conway, voiced Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy until their deaths.

Where to start

There's no story to follow in order, so you can start anywhere. Most fans agree that the first three seasons, made under Hillenburg's direct supervision, are the show at its most consistent, and the 2004 film was originally intended as a series finale. Later seasons lean harder into slapstick and gross-out gags, which some viewers love and others don't.

  1. Seasons 1–3 — the classic run, where the characters are defined and the best-known episodes live.
  2. The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie (2004) — a full adventure that sends SpongeBob and Patrick out of Bikini Bottom.
  3. Later seasons and films — Sponge Out of Water (2015), Sponge on the Run (2020) and the newer spin-off films.
  4. Spin-offs — Kamp Koral shows the cast as kids at summer camp; The Patrick Star Show is a surreal sketch show.

Why the cast has lasted

SpongeBob's characters are drawn in big, simple shapes, both visually and emotionally. Each has one clear want: SpongeBob wants to be useful and liked, Squidward wants to be left alone, Krabs wants money, Plankton wants the formula. That clarity is why the show can drop them into almost any situation and get a story out of it. It's the same engine that powers other long-running ensemble comedies like The Simpsons and Family Guy, just aimed at a younger audience and played with far more innocence.

The show is the centrepiece of Nickelodeon's character line-up. If you like its absurd sense of humour, Adventure Time shares a voice actor in Tom Kenny and a similar willingness to get very strange.

Frequently asked questions

What are the main SpongeBob characters' names?

The core cast is SpongeBob SquarePants, Patrick Star, Squidward Tentacles, Sandy Cheeks, Mr. Krabs, Plankton and Gary the Snail. Recurring favourites include Pearl Krabs, Mrs. Puff, Karen, Larry the Lobster, and Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy.

Who is SpongeBob's best friend?

Patrick Star, the pink starfish who lives under a rock two doors down from SpongeBob's pineapple. Squidward lives in the Easter Island head between them, which is a large part of why Squidward is so unhappy.

Who is the villain in SpongeBob?

Plankton, full name Sheldon J. Plankton. He runs the Chum Bucket across the street from the Krusty Krab and spends most episodes trying to steal the Krabby Patty secret formula, usually with help from his computer wife, Karen.

Is Squidward a squid or an octopus?

An octopus. Creator Stephen Hillenburg designed him with six legs to keep the animation simple, and said that "Squidward" simply sounded better as a name than anything octopus-based.

Who voices SpongeBob?

Tom Kenny has voiced SpongeBob since the show began in 1999. He also voices Gary the Snail and the French narrator. Bill Fagerbakke voices Patrick, Rodger Bumpass voices Squidward, Clancy Brown voices Mr. Krabs, Carolyn Lawrence voices Sandy and Mr. Lawrence voices Plankton.

What kind of animal is Mr. Krabs' daughter Pearl?

Pearl is a sperm whale, while her father is a crab. The show never explains it, and treats the size difference as a running visual joke rather than a mystery to solve.
