Stranger Things begins on a November night in 1983, when twelve-year-old Will Byers cycles home from a game of Dungeons & Dragons and vanishes. His mother refuses to accept he's gone, his friends go looking for him, and they find a girl with a shaved head and a tattooed wrist who can move things with her mind. Behind it all is a government lab and a cold, dark mirror of their town that the kids name the Upside Down.
Created by Matt and Ross Duffer, the show grew from a small '80s horror pastiche into one of Netflix's flagship series. Its cast grew with it: each season adds new friends, new grown-ups and a bigger threat. This guide sorts everyone into the groups the show itself uses, from the Party at the centre to the creatures on the other side.

The Party
"The Party" is what the boys call their D&D group, and the name sticks to the core kids for the whole show. They ride bikes, talk on walkie-talkies and treat every new horror like a campaign to be mapped and solved.
Eleven (Jane Hopper)
Psychokinetic test subject · Adopted daughter of Hopper
Eleven was raised inside Hawkins Lab as a numbered experiment, and she escapes in the first episode with almost no idea how ordinary life works. Her powers (moving objects, crushing things, finding people through a sensory void) are what let the kids fight back. The show is just as interested in the smaller story: a girl learning to trust, make friends, go to school and decide who she is apart from the people who made her a weapon. Her name comes from the number 011 tattooed on her wrist.
- Actor
- Millie Bobby Brown
Mike Wheeler
Party leader · Dungeon Master
Mike runs the D&D campaigns and, by default, the Party. He's stubborn, loyal and quick to believe the impossible, which is why he hides Eleven in his basement rather than calling the police. His friendship with Will and his relationship with Eleven are the two emotional anchors of his story. In later seasons his arc is about saying out loud what he usually keeps to himself.
- Actor
- Finn Wolfhard
Dustin Henderson
The Party's scientist
Dustin is curious, talkative and endlessly enthusiastic, the kid who builds a radio tower in his spare time and adopts a strange creature he finds in the bin. He's often the one who works out how the Upside Down behaves. His friendship with Steve Harrington, which starts in season two, became one of the show's best-loved pairings, and his long-distance girlfriend Suzie gives season three a sweet running joke.
- Actor
- Gaten Matarazzo
Lucas Sinclair
The Party's sceptic
Lucas is the practical one, armed with binoculars and a wrist-rocket slingshot. In season one he's the most suspicious of Eleven, and he's usually the first to ask whether a plan actually makes sense. His relationship with Max drives a lot of his story from season two onward, and in season four he joins the basketball team, which puts him between his old friends and the popular crowd at the worst possible moment.
- Actor
- Caleb McLaughlin
Will Byers
The boy who vanished
Will's disappearance starts the series, and he spends most of season one trapped in the Upside Down. He comes back changed: haunted by visions, sensitive to the other world and, in season two, possessed by the Mind Flayer. He's quiet and artistic, close to his mother and brother, and the show handles his growing feelings for Mike with real care. He's the clearest example of what the Upside Down does to a person.
- Actor
- Noah Schnapp
Max Mayfield
Skateboarder · Joins in season two
Max arrives from California in season two with a skateboard, a high score at the arcade and a volatile stepbrother, Billy. The boys compete for her attention; she mostly wants to be taken seriously. Her friendship with Eleven in season three is pure fun, and her season four storyline, in which grief makes her a target for Vecna, is one of the show's strongest hours of television.
- Actor
- Sadie Sink
Erica Sinclair
Lucas's little sister
Erica is sharp, sarcastic and entirely unimpressed by her brother's friends. She gets pulled into the season three plot because she's small enough to crawl through air vents, and then negotiates free ice cream for life as payment. She's the show's best scene-stealer, and she's braver than she lets on.
- Actor
- Priah Ferguson
The older teens
Running alongside the Party is a second story about Hawkins High students. They start out dealing with ordinary teenage problems (parties, dating, college applications) and end up as the kids' bodyguards.
Steve Harrington
Former king of Hawkins High · Babysitter
Steve begins as Nancy's popular, slightly careless boyfriend and looks set to be a standard '80s jock. Instead he turns into the show's most loved character: the one who shows up with a nail-studded bat, takes a beating so the kids don't have to, and ends up as the Party's unofficial babysitter. His friendships with Dustin and Robin show a gentler side that season one never hinted at.
- Actor
- Joe Keery
Nancy Wheeler
Mike's older sister · Aspiring journalist
Nancy starts as a straight-A student with a new boyfriend and becomes the most determined investigator in the older group. When her best friend Barb vanishes, she refuses to let it go, and she later chases stories at the local newspaper while being dismissed by the men who run it. She's a good shot, a planner and a natural leader, and her relationships with Steve and Jonathan form a long-running triangle.
- Actor
- Natalia Dyer
Jonathan Byers
Will's older brother · Photographer
Jonathan is a quiet loner who has been helping raise Will since their father left. He watches the world through a camera lens, which gets him into trouble in season one and gives him a reason to team up with Nancy. Underneath the shyness he's fiercely protective of his family, and he carries more responsibility than anyone his age should.
- Actor
- Charlie Heaton
Robin Buckley
Steve's co-worker · Joins in season three
Robin works with Steve at the Scoops Ahoy ice-cream parlour in Starcourt Mall and turns out to be a gifted codebreaker. She's fast-talking, funny and good at languages. Her coming-out scene with Steve in season three, and his easy acceptance, is one of the show's most quietly important moments, and her friendship with Nancy grows into a strong partnership in season four.
- Actor
- Maya Hawke
Billy Hargrove
Max's stepbrother
Billy is a hot-tempered newcomer from California who bullies Max and picks fights with Steve. Season three shows where his anger comes from, an abusive father, and then makes him a victim of the Mind Flayer, which uses him as its host. His arc is a hard look at how cruelty gets passed down.
- Actor
- Dacre Montgomery
Eddie Munson
Leader of the Hellfire Club · Season four
Eddie is a long-haired metalhead who runs the school's D&D club and has repeated his senior year more than once. When a cheerleader dies in his trailer, the town decides he's a satanic killer. He's loud, theatrical and much kinder than his reputation, and he became a fan favourite almost immediately.
- Actor
- Joseph Quinn
Barbara "Barb" Holland
Nancy's best friend · Season one
Barb is Nancy's loyal, sensible friend who reluctantly tags along to a party at Steve's house. Her disappearance is a small subplot that the fandom turned into a cause, and the show takes the guilt Nancy feels about it seriously in season two.
- Actor
- Shannon Purser
Argyle
Jonathan's friend in California
Argyle is a relaxed pizza-delivery driver who becomes Jonathan's best friend after the Byers move west. He drives the California group across the country in his delivery van in season four and supplies most of that storyline's comedy.
- Actor
- Eduardo Franco
Jason Carver
Basketball captain · Season four
Jason is the school's golden boy, and after his girlfriend Chrissy dies he channels his grief into leading a mob against Eddie and the Hellfire Club. He's a human antagonist built from panic and righteousness rather than supernatural power.
- Actor
- Mason Dye
The adults
Most grown-ups in Hawkins don't see what's happening. The few who do become as important as the kids.
Joyce Byers
Will and Jonathan's mother
Joyce is a single mother working at the local general store, and when Will goes missing she is the only person who never accepts he's dead. She talks to him through Christmas lights strung across the living room wall, an image that defined the first season. People call her hysterical; she's right every time. Her partnership with Hopper is one of the show's steadiest relationships.
- Actor
- Winona Ryder
Jim Hopper
Hawkins police chief · Eleven's adoptive father
Hopper starts the series as a burned-out small-town chief still grieving his young daughter, Sara. Will's case drags him back into caring about something, and taking in Eleven gives him a second chance at being a father, though he is often clumsy and overprotective about it. His story moves from Hawkins to a Soviet prison and back, and it's the show's most direct study of grief turned into protection.
- Actor
- David Harbour
Murray Bauman
Conspiracy journalist
Murray is a paranoid former reporter who has been investigating Hawkins Lab for years and is, inconveniently, correct about most of it. He's blunt, prickly and very funny, and he ends up as a key ally to Joyce and Hopper. He also speaks Russian, which turns out to be useful.
- Actor
- Brett Gelman
Bob Newby
Joyce's boyfriend · Season two
Bob runs the local RadioShack and calls himself "Bob Newby, superhero" with no irony at all. He's warm, nerdy and genuinely good with Will. His computer skills matter at a crucial moment in season two, and many viewers rank him among the kindest people in the show.
- Actor
- Sean Astin
Karen Wheeler
Mike and Nancy's mother
Karen is a bored suburban mother who senses that her children are hiding something and never quite finds out what. Her near-affair with Billy in season three plays as both comedy and a quiet portrait of loneliness.
- Actor
- Cara Buono
Ted and Holly Wheeler
Mike's father and little sister
Ted is famously oblivious, usually asleep in his armchair while the world ends. Holly is the youngest Wheeler, a toddler in the early seasons who becomes a bigger presence later on.
Dmitri "Enzo" Antonov
Soviet prison guard · Season four
Dmitri is a guard at the Kamchatka prison where Hopper is held. He's a reluctant ally who wants out as badly as Hopper does, and the two form an unlikely friendship.
- Actor
- Tom Wlaschiha
Suzie Bingham
Dustin's girlfriend
Suzie is a brilliant, very sheltered girl from Utah whom Dustin meets at science camp. Everyone assumes Dustin made her up until she appears on the radio in season three, at exactly the right moment.
- Actor
- Gabriella Pizzolo
Hawkins Lab and the government
Hawkins National Laboratory is where the trouble starts: an Energy Department facility running psychic experiments on children, which opened the first gate to the Upside Down.
Dr. Martin Brenner
Head of the Hawkins experiments
Brenner is the silver-haired scientist who raised Eleven and the other numbered children and made them call him "Papa." He's calm, patient and completely willing to hurt children in the name of research. His shadow hangs over Eleven's whole story, and season four forces her to go back to him to recover what she lost.
- Actor
- Matthew Modine
Dr. Sam Owens
Lab director from season two
Owens replaces Brenner's team and is a more decent man working in an indecent institution. He tries to contain the gate and protect Will, and later helps Eleven, though he never quite stops being a government man.
- Actor
- Paul Reiser
Kali (Eight)
Another lab child · Season two
Kali is a fellow test subject who can project illusions. Eleven finds her in Chicago running with a gang of outcasts bent on revenge against the lab's staff. Their episode together is Eleven's first look at a different way to live with her past.
- Actor
- Linnea Berthelsen
Terry Ives
Eleven's birth mother
Terry volunteered for experiments in the 1970s while pregnant, and the lab took her baby. When she tried to get her daughter back, she was left with severe brain damage. Her scenes in season one explain where Eleven came from.
- Actor
- Aimee Mullins
Villains and monsters of the Upside Down
Each season raises the stakes: a single hunting creature, then an army, then a possessing intelligence, and finally the mind behind all of it.
Vecna (Henry Creel / One)
The main villain of the later seasons
Henry Creel was a disturbed, psychic boy who later became Brenner's first test subject, One. He despised what he saw as the artificial order of human life. After Eleven sent him into the Upside Down, he took the name and form of Vecna, a reference to a D&D villain, and began preying on Hawkins teenagers through their guilt and trauma. Season four reveals that he's the intelligence behind the Mind Flayer, which reframes everything the kids faced before.
- Actor
- Jamie Campbell Bower
The Mind Flayer
Shadow monster · Seasons two and three
The Party names it after another D&D monster. It's a huge, spider-like shadow that controls the creatures of the Upside Down as a hive mind, and it reaches into Hawkins by possessing people, first Will and later Billy and many others. In season three it builds itself a body of flesh.
The Demogorgon
Season one creature
The faceless creature whose head opens like a flower. It hunts by smelling blood and moves between worlds through gaps in the walls. The kids name it after the D&D demon prince, and it's the monster most people picture when they think of the show.
Demodogs and Demobats
Upside Down creatures
Demodogs are the adolescent form of the Demogorgon, hunting in packs in season two; one began life as Dustin's pet "Dart." Demobats are the flying swarms that guard Vecna's lair in season four.
The Soviets
Human antagonists · Seasons three and four
A Soviet operation hidden beneath Starcourt Mall tries to reopen the gate, and later runs the prison where Hopper is held. Its agents, including the relentless assassin Grigori, are the show's main human threat in the middle seasons.
Alexei
Soviet scientist · Season three
Alexei is a captured Russian scientist who wins everyone over with his love of cherry Slurpees and carnival games. Murray translates; the friendship that develops is short and touching.
- Actor
- Alec Utgoff

Major deaths and fates (spoilers)
- Barb is killed by the Demogorgon in season one, which the kids don't learn until much later.
- Bob Newby dies in season two, attacked by Demodogs moments after saving everyone in the lab.
- Billy dies in the season three finale, breaking free of the Mind Flayer to protect Eleven.
- Hopper appears to die at the end of season three; season four reveals he's alive in a Soviet prison.
- Dr. Brenner is killed in season four.
- Eddie Munson dies in the Upside Down in season four, buying time for his friends.
- Max is caught by Vecna at the end of season four. Eleven keeps her alive, but she's left in a coma.
The way the show handles these losses, sometimes devastating, sometimes reversed, is a useful case study in character deaths in long-running stories.
What the characters are really about
Stranger Things borrows its look from Spielberg and Stephen King, but its real subject is friendship under pressure. The monsters work as stand-ins for the things that frighten kids in real life: grief, abuse, being different, growing apart.
- Eleven is about building a self after being treated as an object.
- Hopper and Joyce are about parents who refuse to stop fighting for their children.
- Steve and Billy are mirror images: two "bad boys," one of whom gets the chance to become someone better.
- Vecna attacks people through their guilt, which makes the season four story about learning to carry pain without being destroyed by it.
That mix of horror and found family puts it alongside other big ensemble casts. If the monster side is what hooks you, our horror characters guide covers the genre more widely, and villain types explains why Vecna's "personal" style of menace works.

Frequently asked questions
Who is the main character of Stranger Things?
It's an ensemble, but Eleven is the closest thing to a lead. Her escape from Hawkins Lab starts the story, her powers drive most of the plot, and her fight with Vecna is the backbone of the later seasons. Will, Mike and Joyce are close behind: the whole show begins with Will going missing.
What are the names of the kids in Stranger Things?
The original Party is Mike Wheeler, Dustin Henderson, Lucas Sinclair and Will Byers, joined by Eleven in season one. Max Mayfield joins in season two. Lucas's younger sister Erica tags along from season three, and the older teens (Steve, Nancy, Jonathan and Robin) fight alongside them.
Who is Vecna?
Vecna is Henry Creel, a boy with psychic powers who became Dr. Brenner's first test subject, known as One. After Eleven banished him to the Upside Down, he reshaped himself into Vecna. Season four reveals that he's the intelligence behind the Mind Flayer and the attacks on Hawkins. He's played by Jamie Campbell Bower.
Is Hopper Eleven's real dad?
No. Eleven's birth mother is Terry Ives, a woman who took part in Hawkins Lab experiments, and her real name is Jane Ives. Hopper takes her in after season one and legally adopts her as Jane Hopper. Dr. Brenner, whom she called Papa, raised her in the lab but is not her father.
How many seasons of Stranger Things are there?
Five. The series ran from 2016 to 2025, and the fifth season, released in parts in late 2025, is the last. Each season is set roughly a year after the one before, starting in November 1983.
Who plays Eleven in Stranger Things?
Millie Bobby Brown. She was cast as a child for the first season and played the role through the end of the series.
