Anime Voice Actors and Their Roles

Who voices whom, across Japanese anime, English dubs and Western animation. Each actor is listed with the roles they're best known for, linked to our guides for those casts.

61 characters13 min readUpdated

When a character's voice sounds familiar, it usually is. A small number of actors carry an enormous share of anime and animation, and many of them have played characters you'd never connect: the same Japanese actor voices Levi in Attack on Titan and Trafalgar Law in One Piece, and Homer Simpson and Krusty the Clown come from the same throat.

This page lists the actors behind the most recognisable characters on the site, split into three groups: Japanese seiyuu, English dub actors, and Western animation and film voices. Each card lists only roles we're sure of, and links to the cast guide for that series. Use the search box or the chips to filter by group.

Japanese seiyuu

In Japan, voice acting is a career in its own right. Most seiyuu come up through dedicated training schools and talent agencies, and the best known are celebrities who release albums and headline events. The original Japanese cast is also the one the creators and directors worked with directly, which is why many fans treat it as the reference performance.

Sub or dub?

Both are legitimate ways to watch. Japanese performances were recorded with the director and often shaped the animation itself, so they're the closest to what the creators intended. Good dubs let you watch the screen instead of the subtitles, and some, like the English Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood and Cowboy Bebop, are as highly regarded as the originals. The best approach is to try an episode of each and see which version of a character feels right to you.

If you want to get into voice work yourself, read our practical voice acting guide on training, gear, demo reels and unions.
